Inarritu's 2016 work is a masterpiece that won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Actor.

Sakamoto accepted the request even though he was in poor health, recovering from oropharyngeal cancer he had been diagnosed with in 2014. The completed soundtrack became a masterpiece in the history of film music.

In order to express the atmosphere of the frigid northwest of the United States, Sakamoto created music that sounds like a flow of breath, with long phrase intervals and a composition that has almost no metrical structure. The lingering chords of the strings fade away, and in the silence that follows, the chords emerge again. Different from short beats, the rhythm of nature is expressed in sound. It is also noteworthy that this structured sound was played by a live orchestra rather than a computer.

Sakamoto wrote a strange score in which the beat changes every measure in order to play music without a metrical structure, and succeeded in expressing the "space" he had imagined. Electronic sounds are also skillfully incorporated, and Sakamoto himself plays the cello and electric guitar.
