An Interview with Console Wars Author Blake J. Harris

“Sega does what Nintendon’t." If you remember this slogan, you probably also remember being a war torn player on Team Sega or Team Nintendo. The Console Wars, by Blake J. Harris, details Sega’s explosive 1990s growth and their unrivaled battle with Nintendo at that time.

The book explores both sides of the experience, and is one of the most comprehensive and intimate versions of the story to date. The book was also recently produced as a CBS exclusive documentary series.  Harris’ dialogue driven narrative gives the reader not only a deeper look into the business of the console wars, but the key players behind those companies as well. Tom Kalinske, SEGA's stateside leader at the time, becomes the story's protagonist, and a champion of the ideas that led to SEGA's incredible rise to glory.

We sat down for a conversation with Blake J. Harris and were pleased to gain insight into the process of making the book and now documentary series happen and the involvement of Seth Rogen. We asked him what console team he was part of growing up, how things have changed in the industry over the years and if another “Console Wars” would be possible in today’s climate of brands playing it safe.
